Here is the absolute easiest way to set the Back button text in a navigation controller.

1. In the storyboard, click on the Navigation Toolbar for the scene.
2. In the Attributes Inspector, set the Back Button attribute (for example, you can set it to "Back").

Note that you need to set the Back Button attribute on the view controller you are navigating back to...NOT the view controller that displays the Back button at run time. This makes sense when you think about it, because you can specify the back button text for ALL view controllers that navigate back to the scene, by setting this property once.
