If you are building a universal app and you set the background color of a table view cell in Interface Builder, the color of the cell changes for the iPhone at run time, but not the iPad. This is a bug!

To get around this, you can set the background color of the cell in the tableView:cellForRowAtIndexPath: method. For example:

cell.backgroundColor = UIColor.blackColor()
